AFS

The name of the organisation with that I spend my voluntary social year is AFS Intercultural Programs. AFS, which stands for “American Field Service”, is a charitable organisation and already exists since 1914. Today AFS offers student exchanges and voluntary services in order to arbitrate between cultures through intercultural exchange.  Young people are sent to more than 60 countries of all continents. The voluntary services are divided into three different types: CSP (a very flexible program), IJFD (an eleven-month service) and weltwärts, the program that I chose. Weltwärts also organizes eleven-month services with a focus on development policy. The services can be done in the divisions education, social work, health, environment, agriculture, culture and human right. The main ambitions of weltwärts are the learning experience, support of social commitment, intercultural learning, experiences abroad, language skills and personal competences. To afford the voluntary services weltwärts is working with numerous sending organisations (such as AFS) and partner organisations in the host countries.

75% of the program are governmental-funded and the remaining 25% of the arising costs (2500€) have to be borne by the volunteers. They should preferably be brought together by a group of sponsors composed of businesses and private persons for example.
